Tourist Attractions: Kiribati, formerly known as the Gilbert Islands was granted complete independence from the United Kingdom in 1979. Kiribati’s tourist attractions mostly lie in its various beautiful islands and atolls. Kiritimati Island, also known as the Christmas Island, teeming with exotic bird life is the largest coral atoll in the world. The island of Abemama, home to the royal family has many war relics that are worth seeing. There is a Catholic church, which has rainbow-colored window frames on Abaing Island, and the Butaritari has beautiful trees like the breadfruit, coconut, pandanus etc, which make for pretty viewing.
Access: International flights operate only in Tarawa and Christmas Island from Nauru, Majuro and Honululu. If planning on a taking a cruise to Kiribati, Cruise Lines operate yachts to Fanning and Christmas Islands.
Climate: Marked by typical tropical climate, the weather is humid, but bearable because of the presence of moderating trade winds. The island receives heavy rainfall in the southern region.
