Location: North Africa, along the Mediterranean coast, between Morocco to the West and Tunisia and Libya to the East. It is the second largest country in Africa.

Capital: Algiers

Tourist Attractions: The ongoing Civil War and conflict between Islamic groups and the Army has adversely affected tourism in Algeria. Algeria is known for its Mediterranean coastline, its Saharan desert landscape, the Atlas Mountains, the Hoggar Massif, and the Touareg Culture.  The architecture of Algiers, the Saharan oasis town of Timimoun, El-Oued - the ‘Town of a Thousand Domes’ - and Tasilli N’Ajer, - the ‘Plateau of Chasms’ - known for prehistoric cave art amidst a weathered landscape, are famous tourist attractions in Algeria.

Access: Many international airlines fly to Algiers from destinations in Europe. There are also flights from neighboring Tunisia and Morocco to Algiers and Tamanrasset. Ferries travel from Alicante in Spain and Marseilles in France to the port at Algiers. Train and road transport can pose security problems and may not always be functional. Trains from Tunisia travel to the Algerian border. Entry by road is through checkpoints on the border with Tunisia
