Air Sahara was founded by Subrata Roy in 1991 and is based in Delhi. Its secondary hubs are Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Bangalore. Air Sahara mainly served cities located in the north Indian sector before diverging out towards the other regions of the country.

Air Sahara became an international carrier in March, 2004 by introducing flights from Chennai to Colombo. Today, it operates flights to international destinations like Kathmandu, Singapore, Durban and London Heathrow. Meanwhile, plans are on to introduce flights to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul.

Air Sahara was in news recently when Jet Airways planned to buy it for $500 million in an all-cash deal. However, the deal later fell through.
